WHY WATER HYACINTH IS SUSTAINABLE?

Pontederia crassipes (formerly Eichhornia crassipes), commonly known as common water hyacinth is an aquatic plant native to South America, naturalized throughout the world, and often invasive outside its native range. 

The invasion of water hyacinths in Indonesia's freshwater habitats is a major concern as it reproduces rapidly and forms dense masses in waterways such as rivers, lakes, swamps, and channels. The negative impacts of water hyacinth are numerous, including hindering fishing activities by making it difficult for fishermen to maneuver their boats and gear, reducing soluble oxygen levels and blocking sunlight, leading to a decline in fish populations. Additionally, dead water hyacinths contribute to river silting and increase the risk of floods.

In light of these environmental challenges, we have found a unique solution by using this invasive plant to create distinctive and stylish furniture and home accessories. By collaborating with the local community, we aim to upscale our production and help both the environment and the local economy. Properly managed, water hyacinths can be a valuable resource for both nature and people. Our goal is to create more furniture made from water hyacinths and 

introduce it to the world, while continuing to support the preservation of the Indonesian environment and communities.
